About

Youssef Lakhrif

Painter. Casablanca β†’ San Diego.

I paint between cities. Between languages. Between the self I left in Casablanca and the one that arrived somewhere else.

Born in Morocco and working today between studios on two continents, my paintings are conversations more than statements. Acrylic, oil, copper leaf, raw canvas. Sometimes a knife. Sometimes the back of a hand. Sometimes nothing but time and the surface deciding what it wants to be.

The work moves through abstraction, figuration, and the territory between β€” pulling from the textures of the medina, the saturation of the Atlantic, the cold geometry of American cities, and the things I cannot yet name. I am drawn to contradictions: tenderness inside violence, order beneath chaos, presence carved out of doubt. I paint to find out what I think.

A note on the work

Every painting on this site is an original β€” one of one. Signed by hand, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, and made with archival materials intended to last generations. Once a piece sells, it does not return.

The image, however, can. Every painting is also offered as a museum-quality giclΓ©e print in three sizes β€” so the work can travel further than the original can.

Commissions

I accept a small number of commissions each year for private homes, hospitality spaces, and corporate collections. If you have a wall, a room, or a brief in mind β€” write to the studio.
